Jenny: The Love of Bitty’s Life

Jenny is a Red-eared Slider turtle that just appeared one day in a neighbor’s yard. She could not have been a wild Slider because she was found nowhere near a water source and could not have survived that far away from water. The neighbors went door to door looking for her family but no one seemed to know where she came from. They brought her to Healing HEART Sanctuary out of desperation, as they were not equipped to keep her.

She had a little fungal problem that was easily fixed and the next step was to find her a new home when the unexpected happened. Bitty and Jenny fell in love! Remember, Bitty is a 51 pound African Sulcata Tortoise who could easily grow to 150 pounds, and Jenny is a little eight-inch 1 to 2 pound Slider. Bitty had been lonely for a while after needing to be separated from his brother Itty because of fighting.

Bitty was fascinated by Jenny but Executive Director Laura Bradshaw wasn’t comfortable at first letting Jenny free to hang out with him as it wouldn’t have taken much for her to be hurt or killed. Laura finally got brave enough to let Jenny out one day, with supervision; and the most amazing thing happened.

Jenny went straight up to Bitty, laid her shell on the ground and went into a yoga pose (which they are famous for). She then took one step forward and put her shell on the ground again and struck another pose. She did this same pattern for about 5 minutes much to Bitty’s delight. She was definitely showing him her best stuff and he was thrilled. During the colder winter months, accommodations are made to make sure they have time together as Jenny needs to mostly stay inside.

It didn’t take long to realize that he would never hurt her and so the two of them have been tooling around the yard together ever since.
