Amelia: Miss Earhart
Amelia, a Scarlet Chested Grasskeet, was named after the famous
female aviator because of her love of flying. Amelia and her sisters
lived in a 4’ x 6’ flight cage as they grew up. The
others were all content to fly from branch to branch in the cage
but not Amelia. She never wanted to land, almost hovering like
a hummingbird to stay in the air. One day she was found on the
bottom of the cage having been attacked by her sisters. Birds generally
only attack their own when there is something wrong with them.
She was having seizures it was later found out. She was immediately
put into a cage of her own and given colloidal silver as well as
other supplements to support her health. Very quickly the seizures
ended.
She never got too comfortable with human touch preferring to
be free and wild, like her namesake. She got to fly around the
sanctuary whenever it was safe, all cats and dogs out of the
area, monitored by Executive
Director Laura Bradshaw. Adults and children alike were very
drawn to her and tried endlessly to tame her. She was never offended
by it but refused give up her wild nature, except every once
in a blue moon when nobody was looking she’d hop on someone’s finger
and sit contented.
Amelia crossed the Rainbow
Bridge in late 2006.
