Maisy: The Actress
Maisy is a very lucky black Labrador Retriever that came to Healing
HEART Sanctuary (HHS) from a Salt Lake City veterinarian’s
office. She had been brought in to the vet’s office to be
euthanized because she had a limp that wouldn’t go away.
The vet staff convinced the owner, who was not very friendly, to
just turn over ownership to them. After working on her leg (it
was believed that she had been kicked) they eventually called Best
Friends Animal Help Department because she could not stay there
forever and Best Friends called HHS.
Maisy’s leg had definitely been hurt at one point but
something just wasn’t making sense. She could run and chase
a ball perfectly without any problems for an hour; and then later,
for no apparent reason, she’d be lame again. Her behavior
wasn’t consistent with an injury. Through observation we
finally figured out the puzzle. Whenever she was uncomfortable
with something she had a limp or would not use the leg at all.
And whenever she was comfortable, she was perfectly four-legged.
She’d learned to act injured to save herself. Thank goodness
she was comfortable and uncomfortable enough at HHS to allow
us to figure it out.
Maisy had a microchip but somehow her number had gotten mixed
up with another dog’s when she received the chip. Best
Friends Animal Help finally got it figured out and realized that
she originally belonged to a rescue in Northern Utah. When they
were contacted, we were told that Maisy and her litter mates
had been found in a box on the freeway and were very lucky to
have survived the experience. They were fostered until old enough
to be adopted out. Her first home turned out not to be a very
good one and she was returned, through no fault of her own. She
was then adopted out to the family in question who was going
to euthanize her for no good reason.
Her original foster family was contacted and was willing to
take her back again and there was talk that just maybe this time
she would stay there, forever.
